Yading Big Kora - planning on making a detour

On my forthcoming trip to Yading in June I hope to do a little detour on the final sections. Thanks to the wonders of Google Earth 3D I have discovered this side valley with some alpine lakes that looks like it's worth exploring. So on the final stretch, instead of the usual route heading over the  7th Pass and returning to Chonggu monastery (in blue) I'm planning a little side trip (in red). Of course it's easy to make plans on Google Earth and find that in real life on the ground it is not so do-able. I found this out to my discomfort when i tried descending alone from the Balagong pass above Dimaluo in Yunnan two years ago. Looks straightforward on Google Earth but the reality was very thick bush, followed by a series of farmsteads each guarded by a rabid Tibetan mastiff!
But anyway I shall give it a go. Nothing to lose in trying.

Wishing you all the best for your forthcoming trip. Looking forward to reading more about it in due course.

If you pass through Kangding, please give my best regards to Kris and Co. at the Zhilam Hostel if you see them.

Best wishes, Tim

Good luck! Look forward to hearing how it goes. I'm still planning a mid-July trip out that way...just spent a few hours on Google Earth myself- had no idea the entire kora could be seen in such detail.

Thanks Tim - will be passing though Kangding - at least on the way back. Zhilam is a nice hostel but I was badly let down there on my last visit: we were left stranded in the wilderness near Gongga Shan by one of their recommended guides. Then to add insult to injury our booking at the hostel wasn't honoured when we made it back to Kangding due to an overbooking. Grrr.

Sorry to hear that, Michael. Actually I nearly lost my booking there too. Where did you end up staying in Kangding instead, at the hostel near Dorje Drak (can't remember its name)? If you get a chance I'd love to see a few pics of how Ngachu Gompa (Anjue Si) and Lhamotse Gompa (Nanwu Si) both look after the re-development which was underway at each when I visited in 2010.
