Yankai paddyfields

This Kodakchrome of American pilots was taken by Don Downie - a pilot himself - in 1945. Yankai was a bomber airfield about 50km north of Kunming - or Yunnan-fu as it was then known. Joseph Rock had a house in the city and often visited from his main residence near Lijiang.



I like to compare it with this picture I took in 1991 near Rock's former residence at Nguluko (Yuhu), north of Lijiang. The mountain, of course, is Mt Yulong Xueshan, formerly known as Mt Satsetso.
