The King of Muli's palace overlooked the Litang river valley. At that time the roofs of the buildings were made of pine planks weighted down with rocks. This stone structure was reported by Joseph Rock to be 60 years old.
Rock first visited Muli, the "Land of the Yellow Lama", which was then a theocratic semi independent little kingdom over the moountains from Lugu Lake. He became good friends with the autocratic [and very fat] king of Muli, and used his connections to seek safe passage to areas such as Yading [The three sacred Konkaling peaks].
