Lhasa monastery by Spencer Chapman, from British Tibet Mission 1936-37

The next few photos are nothing to do with Joseph Rock, but I have added them because they come from the same era and make a good point of comparison to his own photos. They were taken by the explorer Spencer Chapman, who was aprt of the British MIssion to Tibet in 1936. He wroe about his trip in a book, "Lhasa, the Holy City" and that is where I have scanned these photos from.

Swiss aid project in Shuiluo village near Muli

Shuiluo village, Sichuan

Shuiluo village, Sichuan, originally uploaded by jiulong.

Here are a few pictures taken by some Swiss aid workers who have helped construct a school in the remote village of Shuiluo, imbetween Muli and Yading. Joseph Rock passed though here on his way to Konkaling, and described how his retinue of Muli servants did not wish to continue into "bandit country" here, which he described as the Iron River canyon. The Swiss group's website has a lot more pictures and tells the story of their very admirable modern day project.

Excellent pictures of the Salween (Nujiang) valley

Joseph Rock traveled extensively in the Salween valley on his way to and from Kawakarpo. He mentioned the small church at Dimaluo, then overseen by a lonely French priest. Here is a contemporary picture. It was taken taken by by rkchapman and many more can be seen at the Flickr site:

Nice beer, nice view: Wuxu Hai, Jiulong, Sichuan

Wuxu Hai, Jiulong, Sichuan, originally uploaded by jiulong.

I've posted a whole lot more pictures of my recent trip to Wuxu Hai over the Golden Week of 1 May. I didn't get to Sanyanlong or Mundon, partly because of bad weather and mostly because I felt really sick with altitude sickness this time round.
