I’d been romanticizing my own travels around Yunnan about a dozen years ago, but your writing brought back other memories, reminding me it was a mixed bag. Like Mr. Zhang, I admire you going places so remote, especially back then. I can’t imagine what it must’ve been in the 90s (let alone in the days of Joseph Rock)! It stayed the same for so many centuries then changed so fast.Stevehttp://mychinayear.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9406385.post-11519308720228265972021-06-09T01:46:31.106+10:002021-06-09T01:46:31.106+10:00Really enjoying your writing! So many of your stories bring back familiar memories. One surprise though -- I hiked Tiger Leaping Gorge both times, but have no recollection of the trail being that scary. Selective memory, perhaps?BTnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9406385.post-58917219591625105742021-03-08T09:49:21.724+11:002021-03-08T09:49:21.724+11:00Wonderful travelstory, love to reed itWonderful travelstory, love to reed itOleejnarnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9406385.post-15016595970629241282020-09-18T01:02:56.750+10:002020-09-18T01:02:56.750+10:00"The greyish translucent cubes of tofu jelly&..."The greyish translucent cubes of tofu jelly" would be chickpea bean jelly (Ji dou liang fen),it's a very traditional and popular snack in Lijiang. The taste is spicy and sour, and the it was called "black tofu" in the book "Lijiang Fu Zhi Lue (Lijiang Prefecture Gazettee)" in Qianlong period (1736-1796). You can find it in Baisha Ancient Town Now.90https://www.blogger.com/profile/12143424006772733867noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9406385.post-12642069329728312732020-08-30T02:46:12.471+10:002020-08-30T02:46:12.471+10:00Great read, appreciated the honesty.Great read, appreciated the honesty.Tom O'Malleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11901569061339619257noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9406385.post-29417744672435878652016-08-15T14:06:38.524+10:002016-08-15T14:06:38.524+10:00This is an absolutely terrific account, interestin...This is an absolutely terrific account, interesting in so many ways. The ardors of the journey, the sites seen, the experiences, the insights, the contrasts with Rock -- all terrific. "English one-man band takes on US National Geo poobah and his personal traveling army" -- would be a good title. A good subtitle might be "How the world progresses." Cheers and many thanks.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9406385.post-19305638410763548522012-05-11T08:25:39.482+10:002012-05-11T08:25:39.482+10:00Love your work.
